Notes for James Thomas Parks:
From The Hoisington Dispatch, June 25, 1964--In 32 Different Towns; 44 Years on Sections--"I've
been from Osawatomie to Brandon, Colorado, and lived in 32 towns along the Missouri Pacific
Railroad," said James T. "Tom" Parks in reminiscing about his 44 years and five months with the
line.
Tom Parks retired this month. He had been a section foreman for 40 years. He and Mrs.
Parks, who live at 219 E. 4th, plan to "give the fish the devil."
During the years when he was assigned various seciotns of train track to maintain Tom ran
a crew of men numbering from two to 40.
"It depended a great deal on economic conditions," Tom says. "During hard times, a few
men had to do most of the work."
Still in perfect health for all his years of toil, Tom looks forward to taking it easy. But he
won't stop working. After a brief time, he hopes to find part time work.
He has worked with 14 different roadmasters and hundreds of employees. " I want to
express appreciation to all who wer so kind over the years on Mo-Pac," he said.
He was given a fishing rod and reel as a going away gift from his fellow workers up and
down the line.
Tom has seen considerable change in railroad trackage maintenance. First was the switch
from steam to diesel.
"Diesels are more economical to run and don't tear up the track like the old steam engines
with their heavy counter-balances," he notes. "The old steam engines tore up track faster."
Then, too, automation has cut down the number of men needed to keep steel tracks in
shape. Now a few men with new equipment can dothework of many times their number.
Born in Missouri--Tom Parks was born in Albany, Missouri July 6, 1896 [actually 1897].
He attended school at Miller, Kansas. It was at Miller that he met his wife, the former
Elnora May Goldsmith. She was not new to railroading, either. Mrs. Parks' father, Jim Goldsmith,
worked as a section foreman on MoPac for 40 years.
After their marriage Oct. 20, 1920, the family began their moves up and down MoPac
following assignments. They have lived in Hoisington for the past four years and plan to continue
living here.
The Parks have five boys and two girls. They are Eugene "Pat" Parks who works for the
Hoisington school system; Henrietta Holmes of Plains, Kan., a housewife; James L. Parks,
Ellsworth, Kan., teacher; Charles Robert Parks, a teacher at Topeka; Louise Wood of Ulysses, a
housewife; Kenneth Wayne Parks, a teacher at Larned; and Marvin Lee Parks who works at Town
and Country Super Market, Hoisington.
There are 15 grandchildren.
"There were times in the past when we wondered where the next pop of beans was
coming from, but we madit somehow," Tom relates. "Now our family is happy and healthy and you
can't ask for much more than that!"
Both Mr. and Mrs. Parks will receive retirement checks from the railroad retirement fund.
He was a former member of the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. The family
belongs to the Christian Church.
Tom Parks can't imagine how many miles he has covered on MoPac rails both afoot and in
his moto

Obituary from Albany [MO] Ledger--Dead at 94 Years--James Parks, of Near New Castle,Answers
Summons After Almost a Century of Life.--James Parks, familiarly known as "Uncle Jimmy" Parks,
died at the home of his son, Merve, last Saturday February 14th, after an illness of about a week.
Up to the time he was taken with his last sickness he had been in remarkably good health for one
of his advanced years. About three days before the end came he suffered a stroke of paralysis,
and from that time his decline was rapid. His age was 94 years, 1 month and 2 days.
Funeral services were held Sunday, the 15th, at the Jones chapel, conducted by Rev. R.
H. Knisley, of the Pisgah Home, at Los Angeles California, who is conducting a meeting at that
place.
Mr. Parks was a quaint character, one who enjoyed life even to the end. He was a man of
remarkable vigor, and he attributed his good health to his exercise. Within the past few years he
made several trips to Albany, a distance of ten or twelve miles. He would start out in the morning
with a cane or staff in his hand, and with a peculiar stride of his own, begin his tramp towards town.
Sometimes he would make the entire distance to his daughter's, Mrs. J. T. Pratt, two miles
southeast of town, without eating or without assistance in any way. After resting a short time there,
sometimes over night, he would start into town to visit with his old time acquaintances here. He
had stopped in the Ledger office a number of times and would tell of his early days here, and recall
the names of many of the older citizens who have passed away. When he would pass up the street
and meet some citizen who had been here for many years he was in his element in talking of olden
times. In hs talks at this office his mind appeared clear and he could recall the incidents of the later
days as vividly as those of the early ones. He often stated that the long walks did not tire him very
much, and he attributed his longevity largely to his active life.
Mr. Parks was born in Indiana, January 20, 1820, and died February 14, 1914. He was
married to Miss Mary Ann Jacoby in Bourbon county, Kentucky, March 23, 1827, she died about
three years ago. To them were born eleven children, seven of whom are living, and were present at
the funeral. They are Mrs. Sarah Pratt of Albany; Mrs Fannie Akes, of McFall; Charles of Hastings,
Neb.; George, of McFall; Louis of Miller, Kansas; John of Osage City, Kansas; and Merve, of
McFall. Mr. Parks is also survived by 54 grandchildren, many of whom were present at the funeral.
Deceased moved to the vicinity of New Castle in the year of 1850, and for 64 years had
continued to live in that locality. He was a devoted husband, a loving father and kind neighbor, and
will be missed by many. But he had long since passed his allotted time on the earth, and was
finally gathered to his fathers.

Notes for Mary Ann Jacoby:
Obituary from Albany Captial, Thursday, Sept. 22, 1910--Mary Ann Jacoby was born in Bourbon
county, Kentucky, March 23, 1827, her parents moving to Henry county [Kentucky] in the same
state when she was two years old. She was there married to James Parks Sept. 7, 1853. They
moved to Missouri in 1859[more likely 1849], and she had resided in this county up to the time of
her death, Sept. 14, 1910. Five sons and six daughters were born to them, and seven of these are
still living. She is also survived by her husband, who is nearing his 91st year.
She united with the Methodist church when only 15 years old, but later joined the Christian
Church, in which membership she continued faithful till death. She was a devoted wife, and toiled
as only a loving mother can to make her home happy. Trusting in God she spent her life to bless
and make the world better by having lived. She was a good neighbor, a true woman, and come to
her death perfectly resigned to go and join the loved ones beyond the vale of death.

Obituary from Albany Ledger--Mrs. James Parks Dead--Mary Ann Jacoby was born in Bourbon
county, Kentucky, March 23, 1827; moved to Henry county, Kentucky, when two years old; was
married to James Parks September 7, 1843; moved to Missouri in 1850 and lived in the vicinity of
New Castle in Gentry county, up to the time of her death, which occurred on Wednesday, the 14th
of September 1910, at 4:45 AM.
She became a member of the Methodist church at the age of 15 years, but was not
satisfied, and was baptized into the Christian church about 33 years ago, in which she lived a
consistent life up to the time of her death, and like a heroine came to death and willingly went out
into the King's country to ive and be with God forever.
She was the mother of 11 children, six girls and five boys, seven of whom are now living
and were present at the funeral, which was held at the Jones chapel at 3 o'clock, PM, September
16, 1910. words of comfort were spoken by the writer in the presence of a large number of
relatives, neighbors, and devoted friends. Sweet songs were sung and a solo composed and
arranged by Prof. Highnote was rendered by him, that stirred the souls of all present as the words
fell from his lips, magnifying a mother's love and tenderness, devotion and love. The pall bearers
then carried the casket to the new made grave and all that was mortal of this time honored loving
mother was laid to rest. J. H. Coffey

Notes for Lucy Ellen Parks:
Obituary for Lucy Ellen Parks Nicholas-Unknown newspaper--To the Memory of
Lucy (Parks) Nicholas--"The leaves of memory seemed to make a mournful rustling
in the dark" Lucy Ellen Parks was born in Hickory County, MO, January 24, 1855
and died suddenly at her home in east Bethany, April 2, 1921, aged 56 years, 2
months, and 13 days.
She was united in marriage to Geo. T. Nicholas, of Bethany MO, July 12
1905. Early in life she obeyed her Savior and united with the Bethany Christian
Church, of which she held her membership until death. Although not attending
church much in the last few years on account of failing health she often expressed
herself as strong in the faith. She will be sadly missed in the home and the
community in which she lived. She was always ministering to the sick and afflicted
and doing many deeds of kindness. Therefore I would say to the sorrowing ons
"Weep not as those who have no hope. She is not dead, but sleepeth."
Aunt Lucy, as she was familiarly called, leaves a memory that is sweet and
dear to both young and old, especially the Joseph Bartlett family, in which place she

made her home for over 29 years, helping rear some of the younger children and
being like a sister in the homes and an own aunt to all the grandchildren.
She leaves to mourn her departure a sorrowing husband, an aged mother,
Mrs. Minerva Parks, of Albany, MO; two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Pearcy of Miller, MO;
Mrs. Banky Henry of Osage City, Kan: three brothers, Hugh Parks of Miller, MO;
and Zora and Elzer both of Albany. Also three step-children, Allison Nicholas of
Clay Center, Kans. Mrs. Mary Morris of Mammoth Springs, Ark, and Susan
Nicholas of Bethany, and numerous relatives and friends.
The beautiful funeral offerings showed the esteem in which she was held.
Funeral services were conducted at the home April 5th by her pastor, Rev.
C. V. Pearce, assisted by Dr. W. S. Welsh of the Methodist church with interment in
the Miriam Cemetery.
"There is no death--the thing we call death
Is but another, sadder name for life,
Which is itself in insufficient name,
Faint recognition of that unknown life
That flower whose shodow is the Universe."
